Functional Safety Engineer

May Mobility, Inc. is an autonomous vehicle startup located in Ann Arbor, Michigan that deploys fleets of driverless vehicles for enterprise customers. Launched in 2017 with a strong team of experienced roboticists and software engineers with decades of experience fielding autonomous systems in the wild, May Mobility is looking for new team members as we enter into an exciting phase of growth for the company.

May Mobility is looking for a functional safety engineer with demonstrated experience working on software and hardware for safety-critical systems to expand our team as we continue fleet development and testing. Specifically, the functional safety engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Find and mitigate failure modes of autonomous vehicle system design related to vehicle safety by considering interactions between software, firmware, hardware, and mechanical components.
  • Lead regular safety reviews of autonomous vehicle systems and subsystems
  • Work with development team to conduct FMEA studies and review design proposals to mitigate potential risks
  • Design and enforce safety processes and procedures for vehicle fleets
  • Create requirements and guidelines for vehicle testing and deployment
  • Evaluate deployment sites for potential risks
  • Proactively evaluate and add safety checks and mechanisms to processes and systems

A qualified candidate will a background in software, firmware, and/or hardware development skills for complex safety-critical systems, with multiple years experience applying ISO 26262 standards and conducting FMEA in the automotive domain (preferably ADAS or autonomous systems, but also including electrification and other safety-critical systems). This position requires an eye for detail, as well as the ability to work individually and in teams, and superb written communication skills. An ideal applicant will have a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, and 5+ years industry experience working with automotive safety-critical systems.
